Holstein’s Special K’z the Clown (Sara Kreutz) visited Stubbs Memorial Library last Friday, Aug. 1, to entertain a big group of kids with a humorous magic show.
Special K’z started her show with a rendition of “Don’t Go Baking My Tart” with a puppet named “Sweetie Pie.”
She noted that Aug. 1 was the first day of International Clown Week before launching into her act.
Special K’z told the kids that if she said something really funny, they should laugh, clap and say, “Yay!”
Autumn in Holstein will get an early start on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Francis & Co. Fall Fest.
“It’s going to be a day of shopping, creativity, and community,” said owner Kristina Cronin. “We’ll have shopping, coffee, yoga, family-friendly fun outside, giveaways, and deals.”
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Francis & Co. is a baby and children’s clothing store.

Repairs at the Ida County Courthouse are going well, but additional work remains to be done.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met July 29 and heard an update.
One thing the board is interested in is a quote for foam insulation for the steeple.
Auditor Kristy Gilbert said the last she had heard was that work on the air exchange in the attic should be coming up shortly.
“And I know with the roof we’ve had a couple little issues,” said Gilbert.
Sales receipts from the Ida County Fair livestock auction on July 21 totaled $607,611.76. That figure was up from last year’s total of $516,908.26. The total number of animals sold was 345, up from last year’s total of 313. This year, there were 114 hogs, 151 cattle (including 45 pens of three), 64 sheep, and 16 chickens.
A vintage hand-painted sign listing the original Holstein Swimming Pool’s rules is one of many items that will be up for auction at Holstein’s third annual Farm-To-Table dinner on Aug. 7.
The Holstein Betterment Alliance (HBA) is the host of the event, which is a celebration of the community’s agricultural heritage.
HBA member Terri Schimmer said the sign would be great for someone who wants a piece of the old pool, which was recently demolished.
Tickets are on sale now for the Holstein Fire & Ambulance Association Steak Night fundraiser on Thursday, Aug. 21.
The event is one of the association’s annual fundraisers.
“We’ll have a steak dinner, baked potatoes, corn, a lettuce salad and drinks for $50 per ticket,” said Holstein Fire Chief Billy Fraser.
Association members will grill the steaks.
The event will take place inside and outside the Holstein Fire Station at 106 South Kiel St.

A public meeting to discuss cancer in Ida County is planned.
The Iowa Cancer Registry and University of Iowa College of Public Health, in collaboration with the Iowa Cancer Consortium, University of Iowa Health Care Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Iowa Rural Health Association, is hosting the Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project to present county-specific cancer information and address community concerns in each of Iowa’s 99 counties.
As the statewide unemployment average climbed up to 3.7 percent, Ida County beat that with 3.3 percent.
Cherokee County led the region with 2.8 percent, tying Plymouth County, while Monona County was slightly higher at three percent. Buena Vista had 3.4 percent, Sac County stood at 3.5 percent while Woodbury had 3.9 percent, with Crawford County seeing the highest in the region at 4.5 percent.
Iowa’s rate was up from 3.6 percent to 3.7 percent as the national rate was 4.1 percent.
