Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced nine Choose Iowa Butchery Innovation Grant recipients to expand small-scale meat processing capacity within Iowa.

Ridge View’s 2025 Homecoming parade route is different from previous years.
On Thursday, Sept. 25, the parade starts at 6:30 p.m. from the Holstein Super Market’s parking lot. Anyone wishing to have an entry in the parade should be in that vicinity between 5:45-6:15, and a school official will get you lined up. Preregistration is not required.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Holstein United Women in Faith invited ladies, and others in the area, to hear the Orphan Grain Train story - about how it started and what is happening presently. The Orphan Grain Train is a nonprofit faith-based network that ships donated items such as food, clothing, and supplies to different countries, including the USA.
Galva-Holstein voters appear to have given majority support for district use of Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (S.A.V.E.) dollars.
Voters were asked whether the district could continue to use sales tax dollars for building projects, et al.
The issue is not a new tax but a question of using already existing sales tax dollars.
Unofficial totals show a resounding success with 184 in favor and only 14 opposed.
The City of Holstein is looking for voter support to borrow funds for a sewer project.
Borrowing $5.5 million through a loan agreement to be paid for in utility fees and $1.1 million to be raised through increasing the property tax rate.
The impact of the latter for a property valued at $100,000 is estimated at $52.
Consideration is set for Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. in front of the Holstein City Council.
Pumpkin patches have dwindled around Iowa in the last few decades, but the one created by Geralyn and Alan Hoefling near Marcus is going strong.
Hoefling’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze will open to the public this Friday, Sept. 19.
Visitors will be treated to thousands of pumpkins, as well as a big Halloween-themed gift shop, outdoor games and activities for kids and adults, hay rides, a large corn maze and other entertainment.
Girls wrestling was up for approval as Galva-Holstein and Schaller-Crestland discussed a sharing agreement.
During the Sept. 8 meeting, approval was given to a sharing agreement with OABCIG, Cherokee, River Valley, Storm Lake and Alta-Aurelia.
