The Ridge View girls basketball squad came out victorious over Rock Valley in a class 2A playoff game Tuesday night in Holstein. The Raptors looked to put the Rockets away early, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and took a 12-5 lead after the first quarter. Ridge View then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to build a 21-5 lead, and took a 26-10 cushion into the halftime break. Rock Valley would cut into the lead in the third quarter, however, cutting the deficit to 11 as Ridge View took a 37-26 lead into the third quarter.
Several local athletes are near the top of the Western Valley Conference in various basketball categories. In girls’ action, Riley Schiernbeck of OABCIG is fourth in the conference in points scored with 294 points on the season. Madison Stowater of Ridge View is fifth with 287 points. Stowater is also second in the conference in assists with 96 on the season. In rebounding, Emma Vohs of Ridge View is second in the conference with 188 rebounds on the season, while OABCIG’s Schiernbeck is third with 184 boards. Shae Dutler of Ridge View has the third most steals in the conference with 84.
The Ridge View girls basketball squad, fresh off their Western Valley Conference tournament championship, lost a close battle with a talented Storm Lake St. Mary’s team 53-48. St. Mary’s came into the game having lost only once all season. The contest was tight throughout the first half, as the two teams were tied at 12 after one quarter, and Ridge View took a 28-26 lead into the halftime break. Storm Lake St. Mary’s used a strong third quarter to give themselves a little breathing room and take a 44-35 lead into the final period. The Raptors kept battling, outscoring St.
The Ridge View boys basketball squad found itself in quite a battle last Monday night at Storm Lake St. Mary’s. The Raptors held a slim 10-9 lead after one quarter, and went into the halftime break up 27-24. St. Mary’s owned the third quarter, however, outscoring Ridge View 14-7 in that frame to take a 38-34 lead into the final stanza. The Raptors battled back in the fourth quarter, but came up just short in a 51-50 loss.
The Ridge View girls basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Westwood on Saturday night and claimed the Western Valley Conference tournament championship. In the first meeting, Ridge View led the entire game before losing the lead in the fourth quarter. Saturday night’s contest was taking on an eerily similar feeling as Westwood cut a 12-point lead down to two in the closing seconds, but on this night the Raptors would survive Westwood’s last gasp shot attempt to claim the conference crown.
The Ridge View wrestling squad took part in the section wrestling tournament at Sergeant Bluff on Saturday. At 106 pounds, Chayse Hansen placed fourth and scored 11 team points. Hansen won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals. At 138 pounds, Conner Jacobson placed fifth and scored six team points. At 145 pounds, Noah Shepherd placed fourth and scored 11 team points. Shepherd won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals. At 152 pounds, Lucas Else placed third and scored 13.5 team points.
The OABCIG boys basketball squad got off to a fast start against Ridge View in the conference tournament semifinals. The Falcons jumped out to a 9-0 lead and finished the first quarter ahead 18-12. The Raptors fought back and cut the lead to 20-18 in the second quarter, but OABCIG went on a run and led 35-19 at halftime. The Falcons extended the lead to 56-28 after three quarters and finished the game strong to come away with an 81-42 victory.
The Ridge View boys basketball squad fell behind early and couldn’t mount a comeback Friday night, as the Wildcats of Woodbury Central avenged a loss to the Raptors earlier in the season. In a game played at Onawa in the conference tournament consolation round, Woodbury Central built an 18-8 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats extended the margin to 40-20 at halftime, and led 55-27 after three quarters. Ridge View kept battling and outscored Woodbury Central 22-10 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats claimed the 65-49 win.
What started off looking like another ho-hum Ridge View girls basketball win turned into a close contest, as Ridge View defeated West Monona by seven to advance to the conference tournament championship game. The Raptors raced out to a 19-4 lead, and it looked like the outcome would be decided early. West Monona had other ideas, however, trimming the lead to 19-11 after one quarter and tying the game at 21 in the second quarter. The two squads traded baskets the rest of the period and went into the halftime break tied at 27.
