Ridge View girls track coach Angie Kohn has some top athletes coming back this season. Overall, the squad is young, with four seniors, three juniors, twelve sophomores, and eight freshmen. Kohn talked about the strengths of her team.
“I think we will be fairly solid competitors all around,” said Kohn. “We have athletes who can score points for the team in all disciplines. We look to place well in all of these events, with no one event or area being our main strength.”
The Ridge View boys golf squad will be starting their season with some familiar faces. Raptor coach Alex Warnke has some experienced golfers returning in seniors Brady Clausen and Aiden Martin, as well as sophomore Ethan Mason. Warnke is looking at a bigger role for junior Levi Albers, as well as many sophomore and freshman newcomers. The team has a total of 19 golfers out this year.
Ridge View girls golf coach Brian Bode has five golfers ready to improve their game and have some fun this year. The Raptors’ top returning performers are senior Emma Vohs, a first team all-conference selection last season, and junior Beth Mentzer. Looking to replace players gone from last year’s team are sophomore Kierstin Volkert, and freshmen Emma Mentzer and Addison Voge. Bode talked about his team’s strengths and weaknesses.
A group of students on the Ridge View High School archery team qualified for the State Archery tournament in Des Moines this past weekend. The archers qualified in 3D shooting, which is shooting at 3D animal targets, and bullseye shooting, which is a traditional archery target. The team is coached by Justin Kinney.
The Ridge View girls basketball squad came up one win away from a trip to the state tournament Wednesday night, bowing out to a tough Central Lyon squad 67-41 at Kingsley. The Lions got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 13-0 lead and taking a 23-6 lead after one quarter. The Raptors dominated the second quarter, however, outscoring Central Lyon 19-10 to cut the margin to just eight points at halftime, 33-25. Ridge View came out strong in the second half, trimming the deficit to just four points at 37-33 midway through the third quarter.
The Ridge View varsity boys' basketball team participated in the Ridge View Basketball Buddy program once again this year. The goal of the program is to build positive relationships between high school athletes and first grade elementary boys. The hope is also to get youth excited about Ridge View athletics. The high school students met with their buddies once a week throughout the second semester. What a great way to promote social skills by playing games and conversing with one another!
The Ridge View girls basketball squad routed West Monona on Friday night in Holstein, advancing to the substate final on Wednesday, February 23. The Raptors (19-4) will take on Central Lyon (21-2) at Kingsley-Pierson high school at 7 p.m. for the right to play at the state tournament. Unlike Ridge View’s previous two victories over West Monona, which were relatively close, the Raptors took control of the game early Friday night, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and taking a 21-6 lead after the first quarter.
The Ridge View boys basketball squad saw their season come to an end last Monday in a 63-56 playoff loss to East Sac, in a game held at Cherokee. The game was a rematch from earlier this season in which the Raptors defeated the Raiders 53-48. Ridge View came into the game short-handed, playing without the services of Kyler Wunschel due to injury. A competitive first quarter saw East Sac take a 13-9 lead after one period. The two squads traded baskets in the second quarter, which ended with the Raiders going into the halftime break up 28-24.
