In somewhat of a surprising score, the Ridge View football squad came out and dominated the action, handing West Monona a 35-0 defeat at Onawa. Raptors coach Brian Bode talked about the outcome.
“We thought it would be a much closer game,” said Bode. “We didn’t make the mistakes we did last week. Defensively, the kids played great. They had their eyes on their keys, and were swarming to the football. Jake Breyfogle had a nice game. He accounted for all five touchdowns in some fashion. And Kolton Luscombe had a nice game rushing the ball.”
The Ridge View volleyball squad won their own tournament, as they hosted and took home the title at the Ridge View Volleyball Classic in Holstein. The Raptors advanced to the championship round, where they took on a tough East Sac squad. After losing game one 25-17, Ridge View bounced back with a dominating 25-13 victory in game two. That win forced a game three tiebreaker, in which the Raptors edged the Raiders 15-12.
The Ridge View girls volleyball squad traveled to Lawton last Tuesday to take on the Eagles of Lawton-Bronson. The Raptors won a nail biting first set 25-23. In the second set, Ridge View took control and pulled away for a 25-16 victory. Game three would be another close one, however, as Ridge View slipped past the Eagles by a score of 25-22, earning the sweep of the match.
The Ridge View defense really came to play in last Friday night’s football victory over East Sac at Holstein. The Raptors held the Raiders to only a field goal, and that came after a Ridge View fumble in their own territory. After recovering the fumble, East Sac managed only one first down and settled for a field goal and a 3-0 lead with four minutes left in the second quarter.
The Ridge View cross country teams took part in the Le Mars meet at Prairie Rose golf course last Tuesday. In boys action, Brody Bisenius took 37th place out of 97 runners, with a time of 20:05.46. He was followed closely by Odin Hanson with a time of 20:24.47. Robert Forristal turned in a time of 22:26.07, while Tristan Werner finished in 23:37.58. Immediately after him was Cole Jochims with a time of 23:38.53. Matthew Forristal was right behind him with a time of 23:59.09.
The Ridge View volleyball squad earned a second straight sweep to start the season, this time in a 3-0 defeat of Kingsley-Pierson last Tuesday at Schaller. The Raptors dominated game one, winning by a score of 25-13. The Panthers made game two a tighter contest, but still succumbed 25-18. Game three was hotly contested as well, but the Ridge View girls pulled away at the end for a 25-19 victory and a sweep of the match. The Raptors’ offensive attack was led by Rowan Jensen, who put down 16 kills.
The Ridge View cross country squads competed at the Deb Hankens Cross Country Meet in Cherokee on Thursday. In the girls race, Jaycie Vohs captured third place out of 30 runners with a time of 21:57.83. Madison Stowater took ninth place for the Raptors, finishing in a time of 23:28.73. Freshman Addy Tesch crossed the finish line just a few minutes later with a time of 24:35.41. Xaria Rojas turned in a time of 30:44.62, while teammate Kinzie Hagen was close behind with a time of 31:38.27.
The returning experience of the OABCIG football team was evident on Friday night in Ida Grove, as the Falcons got the better of Ridge View 47-6 in the season opener for both squads. The Raptors came into the contest with almost an entirely new starting lineup from last season. OABCIG raced out to leads of 21-0 after the first quarter and 33-0 at halftime.
The Ridge View volleyball team wasted little time in picking up where they left off last year. The Raptors swept South Central Calhoun 3-0 last Tuesday in Lake City, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-18. The Ridge View attack was led by Rowan Jensen with 14 kills and Gabi Mason with eight kills. Madison Stowater and Sydney Blackmore both added four kills to the winning cause. Taya Phillips led the Raptors in assists with 15, while Lilly Whitmer distributed 13 assists.
Iowa became the 16th state in the country to allow its high school athletes to benefit from their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) last week when the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control released guidelines for which a student may earn compensation.
Under the newly-released guidelines, students may earn compensation for their NIL so long as they:
• Do not use their school or Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) or Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) names or logos;
