Businesses shut their doors, and travelers returning from their holiday plans were in for some adjustment as a winter storm hit.
The snow began falling Friday, and during the day Saturday, the area became engulfed.
The Iowa Department of Transportation had most regional roadways marked as completely covered.
Battle Creek logged nine inches of snow by 9:35 a.m. Sunday, according to the Weather Service, one of the region’s highest totals.
The Galva Economic Development Corporation (GEDC) has kicked off a fundraising campaign to restore the old shelter house at Galva City Park.
“The shelter house has become an eyesore and it is something that has been on our list for a long time, so we’re looking forward to making it aesthetically pleasing,” said GEDC Secretary Anne Johnson.
The shelter house was built in 1957.
This year’s Lohff-Schumann Annual cookie fundraiser will take place at the old Holstein City Hall building at 119 S. Main Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 6.
The event is called Cookies, Cocoa, and Coffee for Claus.
The last two cookie fundraisers took place at the American Legion Hall.
Other than the location change, the biggest difference is that there will be no vendors.
The Galva-Holstein Elementary hosted a band and vocal concert on Monday evening, Nov. 17. The concert, entitled “American’s We,” featured patriotic songs performed by the sixth grade band, as well as singers in grades Kindergarten through sixth. The elementary band and vocal were under the direction of Mr. Jonah Kistenmacher and Mrs. Amanda Kinney.
The sixth grade band started the show, performing the tunes “March Across the Seas” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Nancy Johnson, owner of Untie the Knot Yoga Studio and Boutique in Holstein, is passionate about fitness and nutrition. Johnson, along with Laura, Barb, Madison, and Kily, each shared some details of their backgrounds and what they enjoy about fitness training.
The Ridge View dance squad will be performing at the Iowa State Drill & Dance Team (ISDTA) competition on Dec. 4 at Des Moines.
Dance squad members Alyssa Biede, Reese Hawthorne, Naunika Crum, Mylee Dvorak, Bryli Blunk, Savannah Lesher, Alyvia Allerdings, Emlynn Winkel, Marleigh Banks, and Laney Georg will put their talents on display in categories including “Jazz” and “Hip Hop.”
Dance team coach Brianna Witzke shared some details about the event.
Free movies at the Holstein State Theatre will pick up again in early December with a Saturday movie and then will switch to Sundays for the rest of the month.
The first free movie of the month, on Saturday, Dec. 6, will be sponsored by the Holstein Chamber of Commerce and is not part of the theatre’s regular free movie series.
“Big Miracle,” from 2012, is the Chamber’s free movie.
The comedy-drama stars Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski.
Worries over the impact on Ida County roads were among concerns voiced at a public hearing on a proposed wind project.
The Ida County Board of Adjustments had a public hearing Nov. 17 for a conditional use permit under the Ida County Wind Energy Regulations.
The hearing took place in the engineer’s office.
Residents and property owners in Battle, Logan, and Corwin townships are affected by the proposed expansion.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors heard concern from one county municipality on the cost of law enforcement.
Holstein City Administrator Tammy Nuckolls was on hand during the board’s Nov. 18 meeting to address unified county law enforcement.
“I just wanted to open a conversation,” said Nuckolls. “We’re getting on into the new fiscal year. And we just wanted to talk the expense onto the cities.”
She pointed to the cost.
Siouxland Regional Transit System (SRTS) has secured grant funding for a Sioux City facility expansion that will help to serve the wider area, including Ida County.
The expansion includes additional bus storage, two alternative-fueled buses along with charging infrastructure, and new office space.
Additionally, a new Le Mars transit facility will see 16 bus stalls and office space.
