Students at Galva-Holstein Lower Elementary in Holstein had an opportunity to shop at the annual Santa Store on Monday, Dec. 15.
Each child had the opportunity to purchase a maximum of five gifts for family members; each gift cost just $1.
The Santa Store is a program of the Holstein Chamber of Commerce.
It has taken place at Galva-Holstein Lower Elementary for the last 15 years.
Colin Ryan took over the Ida County Engineer job on Oct. 11, following the retirement of his predecessor, Jeff Williams.
Ryan, who lives in Holstein with his wife and two daughters, said he is satisfied with how his first months have gone.
“It’s been a bit of an adventure with our early snow this fall, honestly, but things have been going pretty well,” he said.
Ryan grew up just outside of Webster City, where he graduated from high school in 2011.
The annual Ida County Conservation Christmas Bird Count took place last Sunday, Dec. 21.
The event, created by the Audubon Society, has been taking place since 1900.
“This is the 126th year,” said Ida County Naturalist Danielle Bennett. “It takes place all over the country and beyond.”
Between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, groups interested in participating pick a day and a central location; the count takes place within a 15-mile radius circle during a 24-hour period.
Jamie Whitmer has been elected as board president, while Grant Aschinger is vice president.
The Galva-Holstein board of education saw its organizational meeting Dec. 8.
In addition to electing a president and vice president, the board saw Tyler Vohs take the oath of office.
Natalie Kliegl was appointed as board secretary and board treasurer.
A plea deal has seen a Schaller woman sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Jennifer Lynn Rathe, 35, of Schaller, had been charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, and willful injury causing serious injury, a Class C felony.
As part of a plea deal, the court dismissed the attempted murder charge, which could have put her in prison for a quarter of a century.
The court has ordered an extension of a no contact order until late 2030 against Rathe.
The owner of car dealerships in northwest Iowa is facing the possibility of a quarter century or longer in prison on theft and ongoing criminal conduct charges.
Daniel Dean Winchell, 64, of Cherokee, is charged with a Class B felony charge of ongoing criminal conduct and two Class C felony charges of theft - first degree.
