The Holstein City Council met on April 3, with council members Regennitter, Schimmer, Stevenson, Wiese, and Voss in attendance, as well as Mayor Breyfogle. Director Niemeier updated the Council on public works. There have been two water main leaks the last few weeks that needed to be repaired. Visi-Sewer cleaned and televised sewer mains and checked for needed grouting or repair. Niemeier also reported that they have started doing spring work along with running the street sweeper.
The newly formed Holstein Betterment Alliance (HBA) has been meeting weekly for several months, focused on improving the downtown area of Holstein. The HBA operates under the umbrella of the Holstein Development Authority, a 501c3 organization. Their first project is an ambitious and exciting one that will develop the open area north of the Veterans Memorial Hall at the corner of Main and 1st Street.
Letters From Home/50 states tour, won the hearts of many on Tuesday night, March 28. Erinn Dearth and Dan Beckmann touched hearts with laughter and tears as they sang and danced through the war eras. They honored veterans in the audience with hugs and handshakes during one performance. Yet, other performances throughout the event involved the audience. One man was smacked with kisses from Erinn Dearth’s bright red lips leaving imprints of her lips all over his face. Another performance had audience members in a pretend car honking and laughing with their black hats on.
Brothers A.J. and Brandon Stevenson, now in their 10th year in business as owners of Stevenson Hardware in Holstein, have a wide variety of goods and services to provide area residents. Hardware was even a part of their upbringing.
“When we were growing up,” said A.J., “our grandpa owned a hardware store in Quimby, so we spent a lot of time there.”
Stevenson shared how the brothers came to own the hardware store in Holstein.
Holstein: On April 2 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home, they will be serving hot dogs, chips and pop (Free will donation). The Easter bunny will arrive. Photos at noon. Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. Three age groups- 03, 4-6, 7-10. One Golden egg for each age group to win a bike. One silver egg for each age group to win movie passes.
Galva: On April 8, the Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 10 a.m. at the Galva City Park. The Easter Bunny will arrive after the hunt and will be available for pictures.
It was an amazing night well attended at the Pheasants Forever Banquet on the eve of March 25 at the Skate Palace in Ida Grove. Quite a slew of live and silent auction items were lined up to the circumference of the Skate Palace rink. There was hunting gear, many beautiful framed prints and other decor, and many different guns, and more! The most delicious dinner provided consisted of a generous slice of prime rib, potato casserole, salad, whipped dessert, and buns. There were auction games for kids and adults and drawings enjoyed by all. The whole event grossed $163,000.
On Tuesday, March 21, the Ridge View National Honor Society Induction Ceremony took place at the Rosemary Clausen Center in Holstein. Former Inductees into the National Honor Society, Jake Breyfogle and Beth Mentzer, welcomed us with a stirring speech. Grace Naberhaus educated us on the emblem, while Kyler Wunschel, Beth Mentzer, Shania Graybill, and Levi Albers educated us on Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. These are qualities met of a National Honor Society inductee.
The 2023 Individual Speech Night entertains the community with Poetry, Prose, Storytelling, Improv, Acting and more. It was clear that the All State Performers will do well in the upcoming speech contest. We laughed, we cried, we were mesmerized by the talent on the stage this evening of March 23.
Sioux Valley Automotive, formerly Knaack’s Body Shop, has been providing quality collision repair in Correctionville since 1962. Owners Bob and Karmen Beazley have been running the business since 2011. Karmen gave a brief history of their involvement with the automotive business.
“Bob worked for Gaylen Knaack for many years. When Gaylen was looking at retiring, he approached my husband about taking over the business. Bob had always wanted to own the shop.”
Every 4-H’er knows this motto. This is exactly what the supporters of a new swine barn at the Ida County Fair want you to be a part of. This is an opportunity to continue to promote agriculture and our youth. They have a vision. They need your help.
Peggy Gebers, president of the fair board, said, “We have been discussing the new swine barn for three years now and it has just come to a point that it was time. We have raised enough money to get started. We have quotes for what it takes to build the new swine barn.”
