Burdette Conover, Legion member of Holstein, tells proudly of the Avenue of Flags. Conover explains that it all came about when a boy scout came up with the idea to hang flags for veterans in the mini park. That boy scout was Michael Parrott. Parrott was asked what happens when you have more veterans than flagpoles, he said he would double them up. Conover said the Legion could not have that so the plan was to hang flagpoles on South Kiel St., the area just north of Highway 20. That plan has grown to over 500 flags.
The Holstein City Council conducted a Special Meeting at City Hall on Monday, Jan. 30. Council members in attendance were Regennitter, Stevenson, Voss, Wiese, as well as Mayor Breyfogle. The council discussed the garbage contract with Holstein Sanitation. Billie Carnine discussed the current contract with the council which has not been updated since 2018.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Feb. 1 at the courthouse. Board members in attendance were Chair Creston Schubert and Devlun Whiteing.
The board decided to allow all elected officials except for Supervisors to optionally have county-paid family health insurance benefits, effective July 1.
The supervisors authorized the Chair to sign the Wellness PTO Policy for 2023.
Bret Warnke was approved as a member of the Compensation Commission for Eminent Domain Proceedings until Jan. 3, 2024.
The Galva City Council met in special session on Jan. 30. Council members in attendance were Freese, Hustedt, Langel, and Wuebker, as well as Mayor Wanberg.
The council agreed to spend up to $7,000 for a reconditioned sander and a used pickup truck to put it in. City Clerk and Treasurer Brandt informed the council that the first water meter beacons have stopped communicating and we need to get all the new ones installed as soon as possible.
The Ridge View girls wrestling squad placed 16th out of 138 teams represented at the Girls State Wrestling Tournament in Coralville last week. Tatum Shepherd captured fifth place at 125 pounds, her second time placing in the state tournament. Izzy Deeds placed fifth at 145 pounds, her third time placing in the tournament. All the Raptor girls battled well and every one of them won at least one match, which is pretty rare when taking a team to the state tournament.
Letters From Home-50 State Tour is an exciting show coming to the Rosemary Clausen Center on March 28 at 7 p.m. This tour honors and uplifts veterans from all generations and will definitely make all who come smile and have a good time. The tour starts in Florida in January and then heads west with the Rosemary Clausen Center being the 23rd stop managing to hit all 50 states by the end of May. The Rosemary Clausen stop is special because the proceeds go to the veterans of Ida County.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Members in attendance were Chair Creston Schubert and Devlun Whiteing. The board had met on Jan. 23 with Ryan Berven, Assured Partners and Brad Holten, ISAC Representative with regards to the ISAC Health, Dental, Accident and Vision renewal. It was the consensus of the Board to possibly offer both ISAC Health Plan 11C and Plan 16 to the employees as an option for family health coverage. The Board also reviewed various budgets.
Ida County was significantly better than the state average with the latest unemployment numbers from Iowa Workforce Development.
Iowa’s unemployment was unchanged to end the year at 3.1 percent, a drop of .8 percent from the previous year while the national rate was at 3.9 percent.
Ida County stood at 2.6 percent, .5 percent better than the state.
Sac stood at 2.4 percent, tying Cherokee while Monona was at three percent, Woodbury at 3.2 percent and Crawford County was at 6.1 percent, the highest in the region.
The Ridge View Group Speech Team attended the District Speech Contest at Manson NWW.

Alyssa Dreeszen tells of the State Theatre in Holstein, Iowa dreams. Recently, Alyssa has been in part helped to raise around $70,000. Dreeszen states that a couple who really likes the theatre and has memories of good times there agreed to match $25,000 in donations towards bettering the State Theatre. The money will go to building repairs but hopes are to go into another phase of renovating.
