It will be a fantastic fair this year at the Ida County Fairgrounds! The fair will start off on Tuesday, July 18 and keep going through Sunday, July 23. Beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, there will be 4-H Exhibit Hall judging and Clover Kids Exhibit Hall judging. Rabbit Check-in will start at 4 p.m. and end at 6 p.m., so get your bunnies in there. Enter Open Class is from 4 to 7:15 p.m. sponsored by Ida Grove Food Pride. Also at 4 p.m., you may choose to see the Horse Show in the Grandstand.
A Fireside Chat was conducted with the 48th Vice President Mike Pence and Mrs. Karen Pence Thursday at Cobblestone Inn in Holstein. One of the first things Pence said to the crowd was that if he had known about Ida County, he would have been here a lot sooner. He then said that Teresa Paulsrud, Chair, Ida County GOP, had forgotten her questions and he felt a sense of relief. But after all, she did have her questions and the show went on.
“It is the greatest honor of our lives to serve as Vice President and we thank you for that,” said Pence.
A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. after a routine traffic stop turned instead into charges including eluding and attempting to assault a deputy.
Cash bond has been posted for Eric Steven Vohs, 46, after an incident June 28 in rural Galva, following a complaint of a drunk man driving a Gator at 12:45 p.m., saw a deputy respond who recognized Vohs as the driver.
The vehicle crossed D15 on Landmark Avenue, and deputy Rob McMillen caught up to the driver crossing a bridge south of the intersection with 130th Street where the deputy recognized Vohs.
Situated on West Main Street in downtown Cherokee, is a family-owned furniture and appliance store called Ebert’s. Owners, Steve and Jane Ebert, have operated the business for 15 years. Steve described some of what the store has to offer.
“We’re a full-line GE appliance dealer,” said Ebert. “We sell Tempur-Pedic and Sealy mattresses. We have Southern Motion furniture, Flexsteel furniture, couches, and loveseats, and we sell Big Green Egg grills and Green Mountain grills. We also service everything we sell.”
The Holstein City Council met at City Hall on Monday, July 3. Council members Rod Regennitter, Terri Schimmer, Bonnie Stevenson, Christine Wiese, and Jamison Voss were in attendance, as well as Mayor Kathy Breyfogle.
The council approved Change order #6, adding a gritted plate over grating and structural steel to the backwash tank at the Aquatic Center.
Next to the coffee shop in downtown Holstein, is a unique little store called rehabd. Amy Conover, owner of the store, shared the main items she has to offer.
“We sell clothing, a little bit of decor, accessories and gifts,” she stated. “We are just adding permanent jewelry, so that’s a fun new thing.”
Conover, who opened the business in April of 2016, discussed why she decided to give it a go.
Ahead of a big election cycle, Ida County is getting a bit of exposure with what is believed to be the first visit to Holstein ever by a United States Vice President.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is slated to stop in Holstein July 6 along with his wife Karen for a tour and a luncheon at Cobblestone Inn.
Ryssa Todd of Holstein has run her own cake decorating business since 2008. Todd enjoys seeing happy customers, especially children. She listed some of the main cakes that she makes.
“The majority of what I bake is birthday cakes, graduation cakes, wedding cakes, and cupcakes,” said Todd. I had a few graduation orders this year that were for over 300 cupcakes.”
Representative Randy Feenstra visited Lewis Family Drug in Ida Grove on Tuesday, June 27. Pharmacist Heather Storey and Samantha Peterson welcomed him and gave him a tour of the facility. Feenstra is interested in helping in the pharmacy area because he himself has a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration. Feenstra noted,
“A lot of veterans in this area have to go to Omaha because they cannot process Tri-Care here. We are trying to change that.”
Petersen told of a scenario where a veteran came to them needing his insulin.
Lorna Vollmar got to relive a dream last Tuesday, June 20 at Holstein Senior Living. Kathy Hinojosa, the Life Enrichment Coordinator there, says that as part of their Dare to Dream project, they ask the residents, “what is something that they would like to do or do again?” Lorna Vollmar said she would like to ride a horse. With her health, she is not able to ride a horse, but they could give her the next best thing. Lori McGuire (the hair stylist at Holstein Senior Living), brought in her two ponies for Lorna and the other residents to pet and feed.
