Alice Vollmar

1940 – 2025

 

Alice Mary Speakman Vollmar was born in Sioux City on May 14, 1940. She grew up on a farm in Northwestern Iowa. She graduated from Galva Consolidated School and attended the University of South Dakota and the University of Utah. She graduated from Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis with a B.A. in journalism.

She married Craig Vollmar from Holstein on Jan. 31, 1960. The couple moved for Craig’s job which took them to Utah, Houston and New York. They eventually settled in Minnesota where they raised their six children.

Alice loved writing and became a successful travel writer. She published numerous articles in various travel magazines. She also published travel guide books and collaborated with Otis Hahn to tell his gold mining stories. She was also a featured writer for Twins Magazine. She was a long time member of Common Ground Meditation Center. Alice especially appreciated her 33 years of sobriety. She loved spending time with family and friends. 

Alice was predeceased by husband, Craig; parents, Ella and Ralph Speakman; grandchild, Joshua; and brother, John Speakman. She is survived by her six children: Jill Vollmar, Frank Vollmar, Amy (Chuck) Sunderman, Margaret (Jerry) Mumper, Bob (Vanessa Ramirez-Vollmar) Vollmar, and Alyssa Record; and 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
