JoAnn B. Friedrichsen

1931 – 2023

HOLSTEIN - JoAnn B. Friedrichsen, 91, of Holstein, passed away on Monday, July 3, at Holstein Senior Living of Holstein. A funeral service will be on Saturday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. Burial is at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. A visitation will be on Friday, July 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

JoAnn was born Nov. 19, 1931, to Hans and Ann (Volkert) Grell of Cushing. She graduated from Cushing High School in 1949.

On Sept. 24, 1950, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Orville Friedrichsen. They farmed together for 57 years west of Holstein where Orville grew up. JoAnn loved being a farm wife, and was willing to help out in many different capacities. When the work was done, Orville and JoAnn enjoyed playing cards with friends and dancing the night away. She continued to live on the farm until moving to Holstein Senior Living in 2021. The couple was blessed with three children, daughters, Kristin and Kim, and son, Kirk.

JoAnn was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. Through the years, she served on various women's groups and gave so freely of her delicious baked goods. As an American Legion wife, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served in many areas including Past President.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Kristin Hargens and husband Brian of Hudson, lowa, Kim Schmidt and husband Alan of Arthur, lowa, and Kirk Friedrichsen and wife Jean of Holstein; eleven grandchildren, Benson Hargens (Lora), Kelsey Hargens, Matthew Schmidt (Gena) Schmidt, Aaron Schmidt (Kristy), Micah Schmidt, Isaac Schmidt (Aubrey), Audra Jordan (Lormé), Katie Friedrichsen, Kirstie Bunjes (Wes), Kortney Friedrichsen, and Kyle Friedrichsen (Angela); twenty great-grandchildren, Parker, Lydia, and Mari Hargens, Gabrielle, Gage and Grady Schmidt, Kwin, Meeka, Mya, and Merida Schmidt, Rubie and Scarlett Schmidt, Brooke and Kaylin Schmidt, and Elyon Jourdan, Cade, Kinzley, and Braycen Bunjes, Nova Springate, and Kyle and Angela have one on the way. She is also survived by one sister, Jean Jensen of Kingsley and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Ann Grell; husband, OrvilleOrville's parents, Ed and Edna Friedrichsen; brother, LaVerne Grell and wife Dorothy; sister, Phyllis Conover and husband Tom, and brother-in-law, Virgil Jensen. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Holstein American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225.
