HOLSTEIN - Janet K. Buenger, 78, of Holstein, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Pastor Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be at the Good Hope Cemetery of Cherokee. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

Janet K. Peterson was born July 3, 1946 in Cherokee, to Bertil and Vera (Rud) Peterson of rural Aurelia. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. She attended all thirteen years of her schooling at Aurelia Consolidated School graduating in 1964. She was married to Norman Buenger of West Bend, Iowa, April 3, 1971 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. To this union, four children were born, Brian Allen, Amy Lynn, Ann Renee and Wendy Kay. Norm & Jan have resided in Holstein since 1971.

Jan worked at Steele State Bank of Cherokee for 4 years, Cherokee Bowl, and Christensen Brothers Construction in Cherokee for 10 years. She worked at Heritage Bank for 17 years as head teller. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein, where she served on various boards, and was church Financial Secretary for over 20 years. She was a Girl Scout leader in Holstein for ten years, served on the Thrivent Board for Lutherans in various positions, and a board member of the Western lowa Evangelical Lutheran Church Women. She loved spending time at the lakes with family, lake neighbors and friends and just relaxing. She liked to play the piano, garden, sewing, canning fruits and vegetables, bird watching, puzzles and reading. She loved horseback riding as a child. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved going to Florida for a month in the winter, and especially liked it when family could join them for a part of it.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Norman; three daughters, Amy (Dan) Bruns of Ankeny, Ann Buenger of Urbandale, Iowa, and Wendy Buenger of Clive, Iowa; grandsons; Lucas and Logan Bruns; three sisters, Kathy (Ed) Oie of Fort Myers, Florida, Karen Hirschman of Jackson, Minnesota, and Julie (Michael) Johnson of Estero, Florida; brother, Keith (Jan) Tolzin of Ellensburg, Washington; brother-in-law, Lester Buenger of West Bend, Iowa; and many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Brian in Aug. of 1974, her parents Bertil & Vera Peterson; a sister, Sandra Jean; grandparents August & Anna Peterson and Gus & Sadie Rud; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
