Matt Hanson of Storm Lake, a professional triathlete, and son of Harlan and Kay Hanson of Holstein, set the world record for the overall time (7:39:24) and for the marathon portion (2:34:40) at the North American Championships in The Woodlands, Texas, April 28.

Ironman triathlons are different from other triathlons as they consist of the following set distances: 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a marathon (26.2 miles) to finish, with each portion timed.

When asked how he became interested in Ironman competitions, Hanson said, “I did my first Ironman when I was 26 and ended up qualifying for the world championships as an amateur. Things slowly progressed after, and I started to get faster and faster."
