Ernst only qualifier for state wrestling

Ridge View/River Valley will send one wrestler to the class 2A state individual tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines starting this Thursday. To qualify for the state meet wrestlers had to place first or second at the district meet at Sioux City Heelan Saturday.

RV/RV junior Zander Ernst placed second at 152 Saturday to earn his first ever state appearance. Ernst will take a 38-4 record to the state meet. RV/RV’s other district qualifier, Lucas Else, was fourth at 132.

At the district meet, Ernst opened with a 9-1 major decision win over Zach Strubbe of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. In the championship match, Ernst lost by fall in 1:17 to Jack Gaukel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Three of Ernst’s losses this season have been to Gaukel who is the top ranked wrestler in class 2A at 152. In the second place match, there was no contest as Ernst had already defeated Strubbe.

Else lost both of his matches at the district meet. He opened with a 2-0 loss to Jake McGowan of Heelan and then lost 4-1 to Hunter Steffans of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the match to advance to the second place match. McGowan lost to Tanner Severson of West Lyon in the second place match, which left Else in fourth place. Else finished his junior season with 15-10 record.

RV/RV placed 11th as a team at the district tournament with 13 points. Sergeant Bluff-Luton was first with 91 points.
